Cameron Walker is one of the best small forwards out west in 2015. Here's a highlight reel of Walker…
Top Priority in 2015 Visits Viejas
"It was a great experience because it was a good game and the whole overall atmosphere was great," Cameron said. "I've heard about the student section but I didn't know it was that crazy."
Walker drove down for the day with his parents to check out the game before watching his brother Hunter Walker of UCSD fall to Cal Poly Pomona later that night.
"It was great to see San Diego State play in person because we have watched a number of their games on TV but it's so different seeing them in person," Cameron's father, Eric said. "Don't get to see the fans on TV as they are always focusing on the game but I'm imagining it's always like that.
"Even when the starters were out of the game they got excited for each other when another guy made a play. I was really excited about that. The crowd, the noise level, a lot of people are coming out to support the Aztecs."
The family was able to head into the locker room after the 75-53 victory over the Bulldogs.
"It felt like a neat family atmosphere," Eric said. "We got to go back, talk with coach Fisher, Dutch and visit with coach Bland. Coach Fisher was so excited about the win but he was already looking to get ready for Colorado State and UNLV. Those are two big games."
The 6-foot-6 forward has been the Aztecs top 2015 target since SDSU assistant coach Tony Bland caught an eye of him in Indianapolis (Ind.) during the adidas Invitational this past summer. He extended an offer but Steve Fisher made it "official" during an unofficial visit during the fall.
"It was crazy because the guys are so much bigger and the stuff/gear they have is amazing," Cameron said of what he learned about SDSU on this visit.
Since the offer Bland has stopped by one of Cameron's high school practices and caught three of his four games at the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic in late December. Even Fisher took time out of his schedule to check out the star.
While college coaches can't initiate contact with the sophomore until June 15th, there have been a few schools recruiting the stud harder than the others.
"I think San Diego State being one of them," Eric explained. "I really haven't had a really lot of contact with them but Arizona has talked with his basketball coach a lot via email. I've talked with them a couple of times but I really think San Diego State and Stanford so far.
"Actually to be honest, thinking about it, San Diego State has watched him the most since the high school season. Coach Bland has been to a practice and those games in Torrey Pines along with coach Fisher for a game… Stanford seems to be recruiting Cameron hard but overall San Diego State seems to be recruiting him the hardest."
Walker already holds offers from SDSU, Oregon State, Fresno State, UC Irvine, Rice and Cal Poly along with interest from the entire West Coast and Harvard.
What are the main factors in Cameron's recruitment?
"For me personally is the relationship we have, and especially Cameron has with the head coach," Eric said. "I'm more interested in that than anything else. Whatever school it ends up being once he leaves home, the coach is going to be his father figure. Education too. We are big on education."
One person the Aztecs might want to think of hiring on staff is Cameron's best friend and high school teammate Marcus McMorris. The senior point guard also visited on Saturday and has been pushing his best friend towards SDSU since the day they offered.
"He already likes San Diego State a lot so he liked it a lot," Cameron added. "He keeps telling me that San Diego State is the right place."
